program
Numerous Renaissance paintings depict biblical stories, aiming to bring them closer to people, to encourage their own interpretation, or to facilitate contemplation. Composers also explored this theme, setting relevant biblical passages to music for vocal ensembles. Some of these pieces became so famous that the lyrics could be omitted, allowing the music to be performed instrumentally. Listeners could then conjure their own mental images of the stories.
