How do composers imagine death? In Schubert's famous string quartet *Death and the Maiden*, the girl is initially afraid of the "wild Grim Reaper." But then tranquil sounds follow, painting a completely unexpected picture of dying. The "girls" Caroline Shaw and Joanna Marsh also grapple with the end of life in their works. These perspectives are complemented by Arensky's Tchaikovsky Variations and Adès's homage to the pastoral landscape of Great Britain.
