Daniel Hope – Baroque Advent

Daniel Hope presents Bach and contemporaries.

Music Director Daniel Hope and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra present a veritable concerto medley in this festive concert to mark the beginning of Advent. It was Arcangelo Corelli who gave a fixed form to the interplay between a small group of soloists and the full orchestra, thus inscribing himself in music history as one of the founding fathers of the Baroque instrumental concerto with these concerti grossi. The concluding Pastorale of his most famous concerto grosso bears the subtitle "fatto per la notte di Natale" – written for Christmas Eve – and exudes a peaceful tranquility with its lilting rhythm. A moment of pastoral reflection can also be found in the D minor Concerto for Two Violins and Cello from Antonio Vivaldi's groundbreaking collection L'Estro Armonico, with the graceful Siciliano, embedded between the virtuosic dialogue in the outer movements. The work impressed even Johann Sebastian Bach so much that he reworked it into an organ concerto. With his Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041, one of the finest examples of the Italian concerto, a solo concerto by the Baroque master concludes this evening.
