program

The third concert in the series unfolds a dialogue between two poles of 20th-century French music – Maurice Ravel and Olivier Messiaen.

The first half of the evening is dedicated to Ravel and the theme of musical exoticism: the sensual Arabic coloring of Shéhérazade, as well as the arrangements of Greek and Jewish folk songs, create a vibrant palette of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern motifs.

The second half features the centerpiece of the program: Messiaen's monumental cycle Harawi. Chant d'amour et de mort, the first part of his "Tristan Trilogy." Drawing on Andean folklore and Peruvian myths, Messiaen offers a fresh interpretation of the timeless story of Tristan and Isolde.
