The work combines two pre-recorded vocal parts with a live sung voice. It is based on verses from Frank O'Hara's poem "Wind," which was dedicated to the composer. Both Feldman and O'Hara would have celebrated their 100th birthdays in 2026.
The work's structure is spatially conceived: a voice sings to itself and to its doubles, which are present in the room via loudspeakers. At the same time, Three Voices was a tribute to Feldman's recently deceased friend, the painter Philip Guston—the piece is conceived as funeral music.
It is also a homage to O'Hara. After his fatal accident, verses about falling, which carries one higher than ordinary flight into the sun, were found in his pocket. Feldman perceived the loudspeakers as gravestones – thus creating the impression of a living voice interacting with two artists.
