program

The argovia philharmonic, under the direction of Spanish guest conductor Virginia Martínez, opens its third subscription concert with Richard Strauss's Serenade for 13 wind instruments. The then 17-year-old Strauss is said to have composed the work during class—under his desk, instead of paying attention. Inspired by Mozart's wind serenades, he created a short romance in Andante tempo. Next on the program is Strauss's Oboe Concerto, a chamber work full of cheerfulness and subtle colors, in which the oboe always shines forth. The solo part will be performed by the Spanish oboist Cristina Gómez Godoy. The concert concludes with Amy Beach's Symphony in E minor, "Gaelic," which premiered in 1896 as the first symphony by an American woman composer. In this late-Romantic work, she blends English, Scottish, and Irish melodies into a richly colored symphonic landscape.

Program:
Richard Strauss (1864–1949)
