Forum for Early Music Zurich
Around 1000 years of diverse early music: This is the field to which the FORUM ALTE MUSIK ZÜRICH (Zurich Early Music Forum) has dedicated itself for approximately 20 years, with soon to be presenting 30 festivals in the city of Zurich.
The Zurich-based association was founded in 1995. It promotes early music in its entirety, from the Middle Ages to around 1800, using historically informed performance practice. The FORUM is a prominent element in the musical life of the city and region of Zurich, and thanks to radio and CD recordings, also in the Swiss musical landscape.
Renowned figures have assumed patronage of the FORUM: Alice Harnoncourt in memoriam Nikolaus Harnoncourt (deceased 2016), Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Hinrichsen (University of Zurich), Alexander Pereira (Zurich Opera House / La Scala, Milan), Baroque violinist John Holloway, and former Zurich City Councillor Ruth Genner.
The FORUM organizes two annual festivals in spring and autumn. Prominent early music ensembles and performers from across Europe have appeared and continue to appear at the FORUM: Concerto Italiano, Jordi Savall, Hilliard Ensemble, Christophe Rousset, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Andrea Marcon, as well as numerous performers and ensembles from all parts of Switzerland. Music films, city walks, and readings broaden the program.
The FORUM maintains a close collaboration with the Institute of Musicology at the University of Zurich and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK): at each festival, ZHdK students perform two concerts; the university also holds a symposium on the festival theme each spring.
The FORUM receives a subsidy from the City of Zurich, which is tied to a performance agreement. It further finances its activities through membership fees, concert revenues, and grants from foundations and sponsors.
The board consists of representatives from the Swiss (especially Zurich) music scene who are active as performers, teachers, or journalists. Its current members are: Monika Baer, Martina Joos, Thomas Goetschel, Yvonne Ritter, and Roland Wächter. Executive Committee: Martina Joos and Roland Wächter.
