PROGRAM
C. Saint-Saëns, Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano No. 2, Op. 92
C. Saint-Saëns, Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28 (1863) for Violin and Piano
B. Martinů, Variations sur un thème Slovaque, H. 378, for Cello and Piano
J. Brahms, Trio No. 1, Op. 8 for Violin, Cello and Piano
From Paris to Prague – The Sounds of Europe
In this concert, the piano trio spans a richly colored arc through the European musical landscape of the 19th and 20th centuries. Different national traditions, aesthetic ideals, and musical languages enter into a vibrant dialogue – united by the intimate form of chamber music.
Camille Saint-Saëns opens the evening with French elegance, brilliant virtuosity, and a refined sensitivity to instrumental timbres. His second piano trio, as well as the Introduction et Rondo capriccioso, showcase music full of brilliance, rhythmic energy, and transparent textures, in which the violin and piano engage in a sparkling exchange.
With Bohuslav Martinů, the program continues to Central Europe. His Variations on a Slovak Theme blend folkloric roots with modern harmonies and rhythmic precision. The work thrives on contrasting colors and a clear, pointed musical language, in which the cello plays a particularly expressive role.
The program concludes with Johannes Brahms's first piano trio, Op. 8 – a work of great emotional depth and symphonic scope. Here, the three instruments merge into a dense, warm soundscape that impressively embodies the Romantic idea of tone color as an expression of inner movement.
