Chorale Preludes from the Orgelbüchlein (BWV 615), improvised preludes and interludes.
To elicit the most diverse nuances from chorales, to perform them "in all sorts of ways"—from simple organ preludes to elaborate chorale cantatas—was not merely musical craftsmanship for Johann Sebastian Bach, but a matter of the heart. It was his life's work to make spiritual depth, comfort, and insight tangible through music.
In this, JS Bach revealed himself as an incredible musical thinker, a spiritual architect, and a sonic visionary: using the chorale form as a foundation, he created entire spiritual landscapes. Theological reflections and emotional spaces. Yet Bach, too, was not infallible or finished: of the 164 planned chorale preludes in the Orgelbüchlein, 119 remained unfinished – perhaps an eloquent testament to the almost superhuman dimension of his undertaking.
This program is both a tribute to Bach's work and an exploration of it.
It follows the cycle of the year – from Advent and Christmas through Passiontide, Easter, and Pentecost – and brings Bach's chorales to life in their most diverse forms: as meditative organ pieces, in trio sonatas, and in ensemble sound.
