The remarkable program is characterized by a harmonious combination
of folkloric and classical music traditions from different
European cultures, with a particular focus on Spain
and Central Europe. Arianna Savall, a singer and harpist who
has been bridging the gap between early music and contemporary projects for years, and
Petter Udland Johansen, tenor, multi-instrumentalist, and arranger, open up
new sonic spaces with the SONOS Quartet. Johansen's original
arrangements lend a fresh touch to familiar songs by Purcell, Dvořák, Strauss, and
Mahler without losing their original essence.
At the heart of their work lies the motif of wandering: Dvořák's "Songs My Mother Taught
Me" and Mahler's "Songs of a Wayfarer" speak of origin
and departure; Strauss's "Morgen" of quiet arrival; Catalan folk songs
like "Rossinyol que vas a França" of being on the move between countries.
Berio's "I Wonder as I Wander" encapsulates all these movements as a poetic leitmotif
. This creates a musical journey through times, styles and
landscapes, carried by the special instrumentation of voice, harp,
mandolin and string quartet.
