George Frideric Handel (1685–1759): Ariodante, HWV 33.
Our homage to Handel this time is dedicated to his opera "Ariodante" in a truly phenomenal cast! Led by the magnificent Magdalena Kožená in the title role, this is a collaboration of fantastic singers who perform in all the major opera houses and at important festivals. However, they have remained loyal friends and partners of La Cetra and Andrea Marcon for many years, and after the Basel performance, they will travel with us through half of Europe with this work: to the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, then on to the Handel Festival in Halle, the Theater an der Wien, Oviedo, the Teatro Real in Madrid – and into the recording studio for a new CD production of this wonderful work!
The subject of "Ariodante" is based on an episode from Ariosto's epic poem "Orlando furioso." The story, which for once is not set in Roman antiquity, takes us to the Scottish Highlands. There, Princess Ginevra is condemned to death based on slander, a fate from which she can only be saved by a "trial by ordeal," namely if a knight intervenes on her behalf and defeats her accuser in single combat. You recognize this motif from Wagner's "Lohengrin"? Absolutely! And discover a wildly romantic Handel here... Accordingly, "Ariodante" also differs structurally from most of the composer's opere serie: a striking number of arias and ensembles, numerous choruses and dance scenes arising from the plot, as well as dreamy orchestral pieces replace the rigid structure of the strict alternation of da capo arias and show us a completely new side of Handel...
