program
Angels are considered messengers between heaven and earth, embodying hope and light. For many, they are comforting helpers, whether in the form of gentle protectors or mighty warriors. In music, angels symbolize the pure, perfect sound of heaven. Capturing this sound and making it audible has been both a musical challenge and a heartfelt endeavor for composers of different eras. “Cantus Angelorum” explores this quest in vocal music. While the angelic and celestial finds its expression in a clear, harmonic order in Renaissance works such as Palestrina’s O magnum mysterium or Victoria’s Duo Seraphim, contemporary compositions like Vytautas Miškinis’ Lux aurumque or Ivo Antognini’s The Angel sensitively translate the transcendent into ethereal soundscapes – as if the angels themselves were singing. In some cases, the same texts serve as the basis for entirely different interpretations. The program unfolds a multifaceted panorama of moving works. Transcending time and space, it speaks of the profound human longing for higher protection and security.
