Dénes Várjon, piano
program
As an art of time, music is not a memory only at the moment it is played. And often even then. The composer György Kurtág is a master of musical remembrance. Many of his pieces bear the inscription "in memoriam." With "Kroó György in memoriam," Kurtág commemorates a renowned Hungarian musicologist. Artistic partner Steven Isserlis, in turn, commemorates Kurtág's 100th birthday with this piece for solo cello.
John Tavener's "Eternal Memory" for cello and strings focuses on the eternity of memory, but also on that of a future paradise. In contrast, Robert Schumann's Piano Quintet in E-flat major is powerful and firmly rooted in the here and now. The Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon can be heard here, as well as in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's festively elegant Piano Concerto in C major. A universal musician with exceptional technical and profound musical abilities.
