Dryades Consort Viola da Gamba
program
Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa – famous and infamous: nobleman, composer, and murderer. Yet the attention surrounding the scandal that swirls around him often overshadows his musical achievements: he is one of the most fascinating figures in music history. With chromatic boldness, emotional extremes, and polyphonic sophistication, he transcends the boundaries of the late Renaissance. His madrigal Luci serene e chiare is the centerpiece of an exciting program that illuminates the musical diversity of the late Renaissance. For the first time, the Basel Madrigalists present Gesualdo's music in a version with viola da gamba consort. The combination with vocal music promises an impressive fusion of timbres and a new, richly colored perspective on his works.
The concert juxtaposes the madrigals of Don Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa and Claudio Monteverdi, opening up a sonic space in which Gesualdo's visionary harmonies enter into dialogue with the stylistic currents of his time. Complemented by works from Marenzio, Cifra, Vecchi, and the composer Vittoria Raffaella Aleotti—one of the first women to publish her own book of madrigals—the panorama of the period around 1600 becomes musically tangible.
