Three first-rate trios take center stage at the second chamber concert. Together with Swiss pianist Benjamin Engeli, musicians from the argovia philharmonic will perform Béla Bartók's "Contrasts" for violin, clarinet, and piano. Inspired by old Hungarian peasant folk songs, the work features three dance-like movements. Johannes Brahms's Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano in A minor, Op. 114, is considered the prototype of Brahms's late works. The music seems bathed in a soft light, characterized by serenity and stillness, while all the themes resonate as a gentle farewell to the world. In stark contrast is Beethoven's Trio for Violin, Cello, and Piano in B-flat major, Op. 11, the "Gassenhauer Trio," whose name refers to a then-popular operatic melody heard in the third movement. The work radiates with its lively cheerfulness and upbeat mood, making it very accessible music.
