It was only in the mid-19th century that a chamber music tradition developed in Paris, significantly shaped by Camille Saint-Saëns. He combined the French adaptation of classical forms with the Orientalist fashion of the late 19th century, which is exemplified in the trio works of Mel Bonis and Gabriel Fauré. Saint-Saëns' trio is a fascinating and rarely heard early masterpiece of French chamber music.
