For her debut recital, Sir András Schiff's master student Tähe-Lee Liiv has created a varied program with three pairs of pieces: Arvo Pärt's early, neoclassical Sonatina bridges the gap to Mozart's playful Sonata in G major.
The three pieces from Claude Debussy's groundbreaking Images have three ideal counterparts in three portraits of literary female figures by Debussy's classmate Mel Bonis, who, while incorporating Debussy's impressionistic sounds in her works, never abandons the late-Romantic, passionate realm of expression.
Finally, the six fascinating études by Einojuhani Rautavaara—perhaps the most important Finnish composer of the late 20th century—are juxtaposed with the Ballade by the Norwegian Edvard Grieg. The Ballade, in the form of 24 variations on a Norwegian folk song, is Grieg's most significant piano work.
