program

With one hand she snaps a triple meter, with the other a duple meter, and all the while she sings the violin melody: When America's top violinist Hilary Hahn explains Antonín Dvořák's Violin Concerto "in a nutshell" in a YouTube video, it immediately becomes clear why she chose this particular work for her long-awaited Lucerne Festival debut. Her exuberance and joy are palpable: She loves this piece – and the spark ignites instantly. Hilary Hahn combines lightness with seriousness and virtuosity with poetry. This is precisely why, as many believe, she is in a class of her own. Just like the Vienna Philharmonic: The flagship orchestra from the Danube metropolis demonstrates its mastery of passionate drama, delicate nuances, and melting sound with what is perhaps the finest ballet music ever composed. Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet recounts Shakespeare's "most excellent and lamentable tragedy" with verve, wit, and power. Conductor Tugan Sokhiev has personally compiled a selection of the most beautiful pieces. And we love and suffer along with them, hope until the very last moment—and perhaps even shed a few tears.
