program

Gen Z knows him as "Cateen," the hip YouTuber and cat lover with more than 1.5 million followers. Behind the social media star, whose artistic videos have been viewed over 200 million times, is the Japanese pianist Hayato Sumino, born in 1995. You can even experience him live in the concert hall, now for the first time at the Lucerne Festival. And marvel at what he can do at the piano. Sumino doesn't shy away from even the greatest virtuosic demands, such as the excesses in Guido Agosti's piano transcription of Igor Stravinsky's Firebird. More important to him, however, is the program concept: He has built his Lucerne debut around Frédéric Chopin. He interweaves Chopin pieces with his own neoclassical compositions and improvisations; these are complemented by works by Thomas Adès and Camille Saint-Saëns, which fit perfectly into the "Chopin Orbit." Teenagers and young adults flock to Sumino's concerts – no wonder he just received the audience award at the Opus Klassik awards. But Sumino is more than just a media phenomenon: he received his final polish from Jean-Marc Luisada and also studied at IRCAM in Paris.
