program

For his recital, “artiste étoile” Augustin Hadelich has something special planned. For the first time, he will perform together with Seong-Jin Cho, South Korea’s superstar pianist: world-class talent meets world-class talent. The program couldn’t be more perfect. It includes the delicate, highly romantic Violin Romance by the American Amy Beach, as well as the primal and passionate Sonata by Leoš Janáček with its wild dance rhythms that defy all conventional time signatures. Quite different is Sergei Prokofiev’s weightless Sonata in D major, composed in the midst of World War II, yet sounding anything but apocalyptic. The evening begins, however, with Johannes Brahms: the melodious Sonata in G major, which contains a famous song quotation. Hadelich reveals that he has gained a new understanding of this composer after studying his chamber music. He considers playing music in small ensembles to be the best training ground—for performing with an orchestra and, more broadly, for interacting with people. There, one learns to listen to one another, to respond to each other, to engage in dialogue. A lesson for life.

Program:
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897)
Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78;

Leoš Janáček (1854–1928)
Violin Sonata;

Amy Beach (1867–1944)
Romance for Violin and Piano, Op. 23;

Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953)
Violin Sonata No. 2 in D major, Op. 94a.

Intermission at approximately 8:25 p.m.
