Like a researcher, composer-in-residence Mark Andre explores the possibilities of an instrument. For several years, he has worked closely with bassist Frank Reinecke. The result: a nearly 45-minute solo that coaxes a whole world of new, unusual sounds from the double bass, drawing attention to the fleeting, the unstable, the fragile. This pushes the boundaries of audibility—for example, when the lowest string of the double bass is tuned even lower, down to subcontra E—and aims precisely through this to evoke the transcendent, the metaphysical. For ...selig sind ..., a spatial musical meditation on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, Andre drew on sonic experiences he gained in extensive sessions with Jörg Widmann. "Together, we developed sounds on the clarinet that even I hadn't known before, because they didn't exist," Widmann recounts. "We marveled like children."
