The Lucerne Festival Orchestra performs this concert with a truly massive ensemble: Richard Strauss's richly colored Alpine Symphony calls for 64 strings alone, four woodwinds, eight horns on stage and twelve behind them, plus four trumpets and four trombones, two bass tubas, two harps, organ, celesta, and a huge percussion section. But Strauss coaxes the finest nuances from this gigantic soundscape, depicting a mountain hike in 22 stages. Hunting horns sound, cowbells ring, the waterfall roars—and the Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša masterfully brings this lush soundscape to life. Strauss was the most successful composer of his time, but in the 1920s, he faced a true rival in the young Erich Wolfgang Korngold. What would have happened if Korngold hadn't been forced into exile in America, where his film scores caused a sensation? It wasn't until 1945 that he returned to the classical repertoire and presented his sumptuous Violin Concerto. The Taiwanese-Australian violinist Ray Chen will perform it: "Beautiful enough to die for," the Huffington Post declared of his playing.
