Maximilien Gardel: Ballet-Pantomime: “La Chercheuse d'esprit” (1777) - newly choreographed by Edmund Fairfax
. About the program:
In the abridged Paris version of Gluck's Orphée et Euridice, song and ballet intertwine to form a shared narrative. Orpheus's story is told through song, while the dance translates pain, hope, and love into a visible language. The journey of the singer, who defies even the shadows, has resonated for centuries – a quest that is earnest, grand, and profound.
La Chercheuse d'esprit is a rediscovered ballet-pantomime by Maximilien Gardel, a contemporary of Dauberval (La fille mal gardée) and one of the most important choreographers of the pre-Romantic era. Here, the stage transforms into a living silent film: light, playful, and humorous. Nicette, a young peasant girl, isn't searching for the depths of the underworld, but rather the meaning of life – and finds it in love, which unexpectedly stumbles into her life.
The pre-concert talk takes place 45 minutes before the performance begins.
