Grand gesture

Few solo concertos begin as spectacularly as Peter Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor. Four descending notes in the horns are answered by a tutti chord from the orchestra before, after two repetitions, the solo piano enters with powerful, ascending chords. A grand gesture right from the start – the expansive theme lies beneath in the strings. Pianist Boris Giltburg is considered an expert on the Russian repertoire of the late 19th century. Giltburg's technical brilliance meets a wealth of tonal colors. These can also be experienced in Alexander Glazunov's melancholic Symphony No. 4, Sergei Rachmaninoff's airy Scherzo in D minor, and Robert Schumann's richly contrasting orchestral work "Overture, Scherzo and Finale" in E major. The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen also masters grand gestures – yet the smallest detail is not neglected, but rather vividly brought out.
