program
Schubert’s Octet is a work that at first glance might seem like a delicate divertimento, but upon listening reveals itself as symphonic chamber music of overwhelming breadth. The six movements alternate between elegiac adagios, lively minuets, and expansive variations in which a theme from his opera “Die Freunde von Salamanca” is developed to a level of romantic yearning. Wind and string instruments blend into densely woven tapestries of sound, while impassioned introductions and dance-like interludes lend the work a dramatic dynamism. Even the first performance astonished contemporaries: “Schubert,” wrote Moritz von Schwind, “was inhumanly industrious.”
