Bach Weeks Thun: The Allegory of Desire

Works by Johann Christoph Bach (1642–1702), John Dunstable (1390–1453), Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179), Guillaume de Machaut (1300–1377), Heinrich Schütz (1585–1672), Orlandus Lassus (1532–1594), Alessandro Grandi (1586–1630), Oum Kalthoum (Egypt 1904?–1975), T: Råbi'a al-'Adawiyya al-Qaysiyya (Iraq 8th century), Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643), Dietrich Buxtehude (c.1637–1707), Giovanni Felice Sances (ca. 1600–1679) and Ghalia Benali (*1968).

The Song of Songs, attributed to the wise King Solomon, is the centerpiece of the program presented by the Ensemble Zefiro Torna, the Vokalconsort Berlin, and the Tunisian-Belgian singer Ghalia Benali. This biblical collection of poems about the undeniably erotic love between man and woman—interpreted in a Christian context particularly as an allegory for God's love for humankind—has been set to music many times since the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Works by Hildegard von Bingen, Claudio Monteverdi, and other Western composers will be interwoven with the captivating soundscape of Oriental music in this concert.
